The Outcome

Are Results Guaranteed?

The short answer is no. Within a few generations we could run into an immigrant from a really obscure place where records are sparse or non existant. Within 2 generations we could run into John Smith marrying Mary Jones in London. In that scenario there could be 100s of potential matches at that point and whist we will do our upmost to identify your ancestors the reality is it may prove impossible without purchasing a number of certificates which could prove costly. If we hit a brick wall then a further free telephone consultation will take place and options given to you.

Can We find more?

Prior to 1840 we move away from National Records and get into Parish Records. Some are excelllent and you can trace back many more generations. Some are either lost to time or incomplete. Once we have completed your initial request we will be able to tell you if there is more to discover or if in all likelyhood we have discovered as much as we are likely too.

What if we Fail?

Unsuccesful Searches

The truth of the matter is - It does happen. Sometimes we simply cannot get to the bottom of a mystery. A very recent example was a Mary O'Connor in Ireland with the only known information being a fathers name of Patrick O'Connor. We searched and searched and searched putting in far more hours than budgested for (at no cost). Ultimately there were just so many possible matches that it was simply impossible without further help. In this particular scenario we spoke with the client and refunded for 3 people on a pro rata basis (this was a 63 person tree at £1595 which is £25.30 per person so we reduced the cost by £75.90).

Our help didn't stop there though, we recomended our client submit their DNA, which takes about 6-8 weeks to get results from, and from this we were able to discover a cluster of cousins which enabled us to reduce down the number of possibilities. We are continuing to work with this particular client to try to get to the bottom of the names and stories of that elusive 6th generation.

Our Packages: Things to Consider

At the outset we simply have no idea where a search is going to take us.

We could find that your family have lived in a 1 square mile radius for 200 years. Equally we could find that within 2 generations we are in Ireland or another country altogether where records are poorly kept or non existant.

If your ancestors are from Ireland there will be a £99 surcharge. You have to search for Irish records differently and it takes up a huge amount of time. You will ALWAYS be told in advance if we have ended up in Ireland and asked if you want us to proceed down that line which would incur this cost.

If your ancestors are from elsewhere in the world then we will offer you a quotation. Its impossible to say at the outset what this will be, we will just discuss it should this situation arise.

You then have certificates. Copy Birth, Marriage & Death Certificates can be obtained from the records office at £20 per certificate. This covers the certificate itself, postage and our time in making the application.

You then have DNA. A DNA kit is anywhere between £60 & £100 depending on where you get it from. We charge £20 for interpreting its results.
